It is not uncommon for young adults to experience significant stress during college. So if you’re feeling a bit overwhelmed just know that you’re not alone. Far from it.

Think about it like this: college students may be adjusting to new responsibilities, managing their classes, as well as navigating the newfound pressures of young adulthood. This 180-degree turn in terms of transitioning from childhood to adulthood is objectively stressful. Learning how to manage stress and unwind in college will benefit you well into your journey to adulthood.

Why is managing stress so important?

“While college is an exciting time, it is also a time where stress awareness and management is crucial,” explains Ernesto Lira de la Rosa, Psychologist and Hope for Depression Research Foundation Media Advisor. “College students are at heightened risk of developing anxiety and depression during this time and managing stress can be a good way to mitigate these mental health concerns.”

How do I manage stress in college?

There are a variety of ways to manage stress and it can be helpful to think about them across physical and emotional dimensions. “Physically, this includes taking care of your body through exercise and food and nutrition. Make sure you have enough water throughout the day and that you are keeping up with any medical concerns,” says Lira de la Rosa.

“Emotionally, you may want to consider having a good support network you can reach out to for support. This can include friends, family, or seeing a mental health provider. Additionally, it can also be good to start and maintain a meditation, yoga, or breathwork practice to alleviate stress.”

What gear could help me manage stress in college?

When you first get started with building stress management habits, it can be challenging to find what works for you—but according to Lira de la Rosa, consistency and patience are key.

For example, there are some good meditation apps and devices that help you practice and maintain a meditation routine. If you want to use physical activity to manage stress, you can check out fitness tracker apps or devices to help you get started. These apps and devices can help you with accountability and ensure you are maintaining a routine.

“Overall, you want to take inventory of what types of stress management techniques resonate with you,” says Lira de la Rosa. “Then, you can start by practicing these techniques and work towards building mastery.”

If you're just getting started, here are some of the best essentials that’ll ensure you’re managing stress in college the best way that you can:

The best thing you can possibly do to help manage stress, unwind, and set yourself up for future success is to ensure you’re taking care of your physical body as best as you can. Whether that’s getting in your daily steps or doing a couple of yoga classes each week, regular movement is one of the easiest ways to boost your mood.

The FitBit Sense 2 will help you track all your basic fitness metrics—but it is also designed to alert you whenever your body is displaying signs of stress. This additional feature will help you to become more aware of any stress-induced body responses and work toward finding stress management tools specific to your personal triggers.

This handy smartwatch also boasts an impressive 6+ day battery life and is water resistant to 50m so you won’t have to worry about taking it off in the shower or while swimming.

It is well-known that stress can impact sleep quality, so curating a nest-like bedroom is a smart idea during the college years. This plush, personal-sized blanket measures 60 in x 50 in, making it ideal for catching a quick snooze on the couch or staying cozy in a drafty dorm room.

Blame late-night study sessions, noisy neighbors, or other extracurriculars, but college is a time when quality sleep can become elusive. Make your space as sleep-friendly as possible to ensure there's no tossing and turning.

Plus sometimes the best way to combat a stressful day is to simply take a nap.

If you’re just starting college, investing in a Kindle Paperwhite should be a no-brainer. The lightweight e-reader will allow you to pile most—if not all—of your textbooks in one spot, hence eliminating the need to carry around a heavy backpack all day. It’s also a great way to ensure you always have an easy-reading novel on hand when you want to take a break from academia for a more stress-relieving form of reading.

The compact device boasts an adjustable warm light that makes it much easier on the eyes than say, reading from your iPad or smartphone. It also has an incredibly long 10-week battery life so you won’t have to worry about running out of juice during class.

It’s worth noting that you can also pair your Kindle Paperwhite with an Audible subscription, allowing you to listen to your books directly from your Kindle (as long as you’ve got a pair of Bluetooth headphones, that is — the Kindle doesn’t have a speaker).

This might come as a surprise — but hear us out. Indulging in your favorite hobbies and pastimes shouldn’t be overlooked as one of the best ways to unwind, especially after a long day of lectures and studying. The Nintendo Switch is probably the best way to game in college; you can easily pop it into your backpack for a quick gaming session between classes or you can hand over a controller to your roommate for late-night Mario Kart sessions in the kick-stand mode.

This Nintendo Switch bundle includes everything you need to take advantage of the Switch design, including a Joy-Con converter for tabletop and TV play. It also boasts an impressive 5-9 hour battery life (depending on the length of your gaming) and a stunning LCD screen with the best Nintendo graphics we’ve seen so far.

It might sound cheesy or predictable, but a regular meditation practice really will help you to manage stressful situations or unexpected events that happen throughout your day. Studies suggest that a meditation practice also helps combat insomnia and improve the overall quality of sleep (which we could all use!).

If you’re looking to develop a meditation practice but don’t know where to start, you might want to consider the Core Meditation Trainer. This app-enabled device helps you focus on your breath thanks to the built-in vibrations and lights while also providing guided meditations and soundscapes. It also has ECG biosensors that measure and record your heart, focus, and overall sense of calm so you can track your progress as you go.

If budget wasn’t an issue, we’d tell you to schedule a weekly deep tissue massage to help combat stress on the regular. The Theragun Mini, however, is a pretty decent (and budget-friendly) consolation prize.

This compact massage gun is designed to help foster a sense of calm as well as relieve any pain and tension that you might have in the body thanks to its intelligently-designed attachments that target different areas of the body.

We particularly like that the Theragun Mini is Bluetooth-enabled and includes access to a free smartphone app. The app is designed to guide you through specific routines that’ll help relieve tension without you having to do any guesswork.
