If you're in the market for new smart bulbs for your home, the choice can feel overwhelming. With so many smart lighting options out there, where do you even start? You know you want to add to your smart home with some similarly smart bulbs, and you've gotten as far as knowing Alexa is how you want to use them, but then what?

We've taken a look at the very best smart bulbs that work with Alexa. Each of these smart light bulbs caters to different prices, budgets, and needs, so there's something for everyone here. While it might seem like something like a Philips Hue system is the go-to for smart LED light bulbs, it really does depend on what you plan on doing within your home. We've looked at how well voice controls work, the colors available through your smart light bulb choices, as well as investigated which bulbs require a hub to operate properly. Read on and we'll soon decipher any confusion you might have.

While you're debating making your home smarter, don't forget to consider picking up some of the best smart plugs on the market. These are a great way of making “dumb” technology more up-to-date. Alternatively, improve your Alexa coverage with one of the best smart speakers too so you're in full control of your smart home and your smart LED bulb system.

What is a smart bulb?

It's easy to be lured into the temptation of fancy new technology without actually knowing what it means. If you've seen the term smart bulb or smart light bulb and you're not quite sure what that means - don't worry. Effectively, it's a LED bulb that's capable of communicating with other devices within your home either via the internet or your home network, allowing you to control it in more advanced ways than a regular light bulb. You might see a lot of mention of Hue lights or the need for a Hue hub, but some of the simplest LED bulbs out there work almost like a regular one but just with the ability to use voice control or a voice command to manipulate them.

Smart bulbs fit into a regular light socket so you don't even need to do anything too complicated to get them set up.

What's so great about smart bulbs?

Convenience, simply put. Instead of needing to switch off your light bulb via a conventional switch, you can speak to it via Alexa commands (and other methods) meaning you're in far more control. It's useful for those with mobility issues in particular but it's also great for anyone who wants to feel in full control. Combined with a selection of smart speakers such as the Amazon Echo and Echo Dot and you're good to go with controlling your home from anywhere in the vicinity.

Smart bulbs also tend to come with other useful features such as being able to emit various different colors or tones. There's no all-or-nothing setting with most light bulbs meaning you can choose to enjoy dim ambient light in the evenings or bright daytime style lighting when you need to be able to focus on something.

It's also possible to schedule smart light bulbs so they come on automatically at certain times of the day meaning you can return home to a fully lit home or choose to turn on the lights while you're away from home, suggesting to any nefarious strangers that someone is actually home.

Do I need a hub to use a smart bulb or smart lighting?

Not always. It depends on the smart bulb in question. Some smart light bulbs require a hub to work such as those from Philips Hue but others don't require a bridge or hub to work correctly. The key to smart bulbs for Alexa is that they support Alexa other than that the options you need are pretty flexible.

For all the smart light bulbs listed below, we've included information on whether you need a hub or not to be able to use the smart lights in question.

How long does it take to set up smart lighting?

Generally, not long. Some smart lights take mere seconds to set up. Pair up a bridge or hub and the process can take longer but this is usually a one-time deal with future setups of individual lights taking much less time.

Where things can take longer is when it comes to getting your smart lighting just how you want it. Tweaking schedules and color schemes are generally when things can take a bit longer but we're still only talking 30 minutes or so at the most. Of course, via Alexa commands, you can do most of this using your voice rather than needing to get more involved with an app.

Philips Hue is a big name in the smart light bulb world for a good reason. Incredibly simple to set up, it's ideally suited for newbies to smart lighting and those keen to get every feature possible. Unlike some smart light bulb solutions for Alexa, you'll need a Hue hub to use the light bulbs which increases the price but it comes with some advantages. Once you've set up the hub, adding extra bulbs takes mere seconds and is very convenient. The hub also offers support for other smart home devices such as Apple HomeKit and Google Assistant as well as Alexa. It's possible to buy both white and color based bulbs with even the white bulbs offering 50,000 shades of tuneable white light.

If you don't mind a little bit of tweaking, Wyze Labs Smart Wyze Bulbs are a great bet for those on a budget. They typically require a little more setup to get started than some pricier alternatives and you'll need to be experienced with IFTTT to use them alongside other smart home devices most effectively, however, they still provide Alexa support out of the box. With 16 million colors to choose from and a choice of custom presets and temperature controls, you can easily automate processes using your voice or the Wyze app.

At such a low price, it feels almost wrong to point out any flaws to Sengled Smart Light Bulbs. Fortunately, there aren't many other than some occasional syncing issues. Instead, for a low price, you get a smart light bulb that offers high brightness, millions of colors, and easy to use Alexa controls. Alexa is the only supported assistant here but that's plenty for most users, and it's a great way to enjoy smart lighting on a tight budget. With the equivalent of 60W or 800 lumens, the effects are appropriately illuminating.

Offering extensive support for far more than just Alexa including Google Assistant, and Apple HomeKit, the LIFX Color Smart LED Light Bulb doesn't require a hub but it is a fairly chunky light bulb. That can be awkward depending on the fitting you require but it does mean that you can enjoy 550 billion possible color combinations and a vast white range too. Setup is reasonably simple too with the results looking pretty pleasing. Just look out for its 2.4Ghz wireless only support. This shouldn't be an issue for many users but it's worth acknowledging.

An inexpensive competitor to the likes of Philip Hue bulbs, the Ring Smart LED Bulb offers very similar features. It requires the Ring bridge to work fully but you can then set schedules, turn lights on or off remotely, get notifications, and much more via the Ring app. And, of course, you can manipulate lights with your voice using Alexa. The lights don't feel quite as bright as other rivals but that's a relatively small price to pay given they're cheaper too. Just bear this in mind if you'd prefer the brightest of lights for your living situation.

A familiar name in the networking world, TP-Link also has its own range of smart bulbs courtesy of Kasa. They pack an impressive punch for the price with no need for a hub, and extensive lighting options too with 850 Lumens at their disposal. Compatible with more than just Alexa, it's not quite as feature rich as other bulbs with the app reasonable rather than fantastic, but that's no great loss at this price. Look out for the fact it only supports 2.4Ghz Wi-Fi networks if yours is a 5Ghz based connection.

Maxonar LED Strip Lights

Maxonar LED Strip Lights

Best For An Alternative Form Of Smart Lighting

Not quite smart bulbs in the conventional sense, this Maxonar LED Strip Light is ideal if you want to scatter some lighting around your home without being constrained to a light socket. Waterproof and able to be used outdoors, it's easy to attach to surfaces before using Alexa to command it to work its way through the 16 million colors available. It's possible to dim and brighten the process simply enough adding some fun atmosphere to your home. It's not as bright as a regular light, of course, but it's a neat addition alongside other smart lighting.

Nitebird Smart Light Bulbs skip the fancy side of smart lighting. It doesn't offer a particularly clever looking app, for instance, but it gets right to the crux of the matter making it easy to set up schedules, dim lights and so forth, either via the app or via your voice and Alexa. Equivalent to 75W bulbs, they're not quite as energy efficient as some alternatives but they do the job well otherwise. Again, look out for the need for a 2.4Ghz wireless network.
